Alpine Habitat Diversity - HABITALP
Work package 10 - Landscape Biodiversity
Management: Nationalpark Berchtesgaden
Duration: 11/2002 – 09/2006
In work package 10 the habitat areas identified in the aerial images of work package 7 are used to develop parameters that describe the diversity of the landscape in the participating alpine protected areas according to a uniform standard.
This is achieved through the modelling of local interpretation data in the GIS and database of work package 9, which will be realized by the Université Lausanne UNIL and the company e.m.u. projekte.
In a first step the common methods are developed in an exemplary way for the partner areas with already existing interpretation according to HABITALP standard. Regional coordinators support the scientific methodological discussions.
The continued evolution of the interpretation key in the work packages 6 and 7 is considered in the modelling parameters. In addition, abiotic parameters derived from the digital elevation model (altitude, aspect, slope etc.) will further differentiate the diversity of the habitat polygons.
The application of the standardized modelling algorithms to all participating project partners will allow for an alpine wide comparison of landscape diversity in the protected areas. By the aid of CORINE land cover 2000 and SRTM digital elevation data a generalized transfer of modelling methods to the space in between protected areas will be tested.
The results of this work package contribute to a number of international conventions on the preservation of biodiversity.
Emerging from the discussions on the diversity assessment of the landscape and the possible application of such analyses, e.m.u. projekte develops a potential scenario of future cooperation in transnational protected areasmanagement.
