Work package 6 - Interpretation key
Management: Nationalpark Hohe Tauern
Duration: 11/2002 – 03/2006
In work package 6, the project group establishes
a common interpretation key for CIR aerial photographs, to be used
by all partners. This coding system will encompass a large number
of characteristic habitats in representative protected areas of
the alpine space and is a prerequisite for the standardized interpretation
of the aerial photographs.

The basis for this is an existing hierarchic
interpretation key used in Germany, which will be extended
to include the alpine habitats of the participating project
partners.
The Landscape
Informatics Centre (LIZ) of the Weihenstephan University
of Applied Sciences supervises and coordinates as common
external expert of the alpine project level the scientific
discussion on the interpretation key between the landscape
experts of the project group. Regional coordinators are
supporting this work.

Additions to the key are continuously incorporated.
These additions build upon the existing knowledge of habitats and
on the interpretation results. Concurrently, the LIZ creates a handbook
for the delimitation and description of the identifiable habitats
(mapping guidelines).
Just before the beginning of interpetation in work
package 7 the LIZ will prepare the aerial image interpreters of
the partner areas for their task through specialized training programmes,
so that a uniform technical standard is guaranteed also for the
practical application of the common interpretation method (know-how
transfer).
At the end of the project, the final version of the interpretation
key as well as of the corresponding mapping instructions ("guidelines
for delimitation and interpretation") will be documented and
integrated into the subsequent work packages.
